Woohoo – Let’s Go Nuts!

Hello, Heffy Doodlers! Tallie here with you again. Today’s card is part of my exploration of creating different scenes with different types of media. For this card, I used the new Nuts About You stamp set and focused on my coloured pencils to create the scene.

I started out by stamping the scene elements from the Nuts About You stamp set in some Memento Tuxedo Black ink onto some Alcohol Friendly Marker Cardstock. For pencils, I really should have chosen a paper with more ‘tooth’ to help get a better blend. I chose some bright autumnal colours to compliment the red squirrels and coloured them in with my coloured pencils. I then die cut them with the coordinating dies.

Now – onto the background. With markers, I usually start on this part first, but I wanted to get an idea of the contrast – the background needed to be lighter than the foreground elements to bring them into focus. On some white card, I gently scribbled some green and blue pencils to roughly mark out a nature scene. I then created the grass using multiple green pencils, flicking in the same way as I would with markers. It’s important to make sure that there aren’t uniform lines of grass blades to make it look more natural. I then die cut this with a rectangle from the Mini Essentials set and added in some stitch marks with a black pencil to bring some cohesiveness to the panel.

For the sentiment, I used another technique I usually reserve for markers – creating custom coloured sentiments. I scribbled some of the same orange-brown pencils onto another panel and die cut using the Woohoo Shadow Heffy Cuts die. I adhered this to the bottom of the panel, along with the other scene elements, and finished off the card by stamping out the ‘Let’s Go Nuts!’ sentiment from the Nuts About You stamp set.

It gives a more subtle effect when you use pencils in this way. My colouring definitely isn’t as smooth as with markers, but I like the almost storybook effect it gets!
