Unicorns and Rainbows

Hello, Heffy Doodlers! Tallie here with you today. I’m sharing this bright and magical card featuring the Heffy Doodle Fluffy Puffy Unicorns stamp set. I really hate having to send sympathy cards, so what better way than to send rainbows and unicorns to make someone smile instead? Keep reading for some tips on how to make your pencils pop on kraft!

I’m really loving the coloured pencil on kraft cardstock look, so I started out by stamping my scene using some Lawn Fawn Jellyfish ink (great for no-line colouring and coloured pencils). I stamped the foreground elements first and worked my way to the background – so unicorn, clouds, rainbow and sparkles. I masked off the unicorn as I had a custom made mask made from Heffy Tape, but I didn’t bother with the other elements as I knew the ink was light enough to be hidden by the white pencil.

My first tip for getting bright colours on kraft cardstock is to use a lot of white. I had clouds and I made the unicorn’s body white. This contrasts directly with the dull brown of the kraft. My second tip is to lay down a light layer of white pencil before adding your colours over the top – this neutralises the dullness of the kraft and gives you a good base. Just don’t press too hard, else you’ll find your colours become more pastel than brights!

I used at least three pencils for each colour to get that dimension – this is important for the no line look as you don’t have the thick black line. Use lots of light layers to build up the colour, finishing with a burnishing layer (where you press hard and cover all the surface) to get that finished look.

I finished off the card by stamping the ‘sending unicorns and rainbows’ in some Lawn Fawn Yeti white pigment ink underneath the scene.

A simple, but colourful way to let someone know you’re thinking about them!
