Say Happy Birthday with Colour

Hello, Tallie here with you today with another card that features items from the new release. My card features the Heart Pencil dies along with an older set, Bold Banners. I’m not usually one for dies as they don’t normally give me the chance to use my Copics, but this die has converted me! I can see lots of use for this one, right from CAS type card as I have today, all the way through to interactive cards. This die would also be a good project for kids to colour in.

I started off by die cutting the pencils and the background from some blending cardstock. Here’s a tip – if possible, keep the die cuts in the die or on your cutting plate as you colour them in, otherwise it’s really easy to get confused about which piece goes where – and they’re all different sizes!

I then chose some markers in a rainbow colour scheme, adding in an extra pink at the beginning and a darker green in the middle. Using markers to colour in the die cuts helps to make them look more dimensional, so I concentrated the shading to the bottom and outsides of the pencils to give them that ’rounded’ effect. Bonus points to you if you can make them look hexagonal in shape!

Once coloured, I find the best way to keep it all together is to cover the background piece in tape adhesive. The bottoms don’t really matter too much, but make sure you get a good coverage at the top for the smaller pieces. Once you’ve adhered the die cuts to the background, you have a contained piece that is easier to centre on a card. Plus, by itself this would make a good gift tag!

For the sentiment, I used the Happy Birthday from Bold Banners, stamped in some Catherine Pooler Ink. As I had all that dimension on the pencils, I had to add a little darker pencil to the bottom to stop it from seeming so flat.

Once adhered to a card base, this makes a colourful clean and simple card. Swap the markers for some Distress Ink and the design can easily be mass-produced!

Add a stencilled background like the Lots of Happy and you can boost the rainbow effect! I used the new Wavy Banner Sentiments on this card.
