Rawr Means ‘Let’s Party!’ in Dinosaur

Hello crafty friends! My name is Peggy Emmerink and welcome to my Heffy Doodle blog series called Color Wheel Combos! I usually choose the colors for my card either intuitively or get inspiration from fellow crafters. But for this series, I wanted to get up close and personal with color by using a color wheel to help me choose colors that work well together. I hope to learn a lot for myself along the way. But I certainly hope you will enjoy going on this journey of discovery with me! Let’s get started!

Today I’m showing you a Split Complementary Color Scheme. This color scheme takes up a base color and two secondary colors. It is similar to the complementary color scheme, but one of the complements is split. The split complementary color scheme is versatile, pleasant, and easy to achieve. It offers the same advantages of a complementary color scheme in terms of contrast and balance between warm and cool color temperatures.

I started with a white standard size card base. From some white cardstock suitable for ink blending I cut three identical Imperial Stitched Rectangles slightly smaller than my card base. On one of the panels I used a hillside border and on one a grassy border die from the Freshly Cut Grass die set, so I could layer these for my scene. I used some Distress Ink in Tea Dye and Vintage Photo to make the ground panel. I used Distress Ink in Twisted Citron for the grassy panel. The background panel was blended with Distress Oxide Salvaged Patina, Spun Sugar and Worn Lipstick. The colors used in my background already make up the three colors in the split complementary color scheme I chose of Yellow-Green, Blue-Green and Red.

I cut the Let’s Party Jumbo Sentiment twice from white cardstock. The one I used as the bottom layer, I colored pink with a copic marker. The die cut I used on the top I left white and I cut away the stars, so the pink colored ones underneath would show. I layered the white die cut over the pink one slightly skewed so a little pink could show on the left side of the white letters. I adhered my sentiment with liquid glue.

The last step was to color my images from the Dino Time and Geology Rocks stamp sets. If you like that last set you should totally grab one of the last ones, because it is retiring. There is still some discounted stock of it in the Heffy Doodle Vault. I colored all the images with my alcohol markers and finished them with white gel pen accents. I adhered everything with foam tape and liquid glue.

I think this color scheme looks super fun! Hope you love these happy dinosaurs as much as I do!

Long distance hugs,

Peggy
