Lucky Friends: Tips for Composing a Scene Card

It’s about that time of year when things magically turn green in more ways than one! Tallie here, bringing some good old Irish luck to the blog today with this Lucky Friends birthday card, featuring the Lucky Friends, Fluffy Puffy Unicorns, Popping By and Bold Banners stamp sets. Keep reading for a few tips on composing a one layer scene card like this one! Also, as a bonus, here’s a little inspiration for the Heffy Doodlers Facebook Group March Challenge: Shake Your Shamrock!

Before starting a scene card like this, it is important to think about the composition. I had in mind the two pots of gold, in front of a rainbow, with the leprechaun holding a bunch of balloons. The trick is to balance the elements – in this case, I offset the rainbow to make the balloons pop out.

Firstly, I started by stamping out the leprechaun from the Lucky Friends set as he is the central front element. I made sure to use some Copic friendly ink on some alcohol marker friendly cardstock. You want to stamp the images in the order you see them – from foreground to background. After creating a mask from some Post-It Notes (Heffy Tape is also good here!), I stamped out the two cauldrons, the coins, the balloons from Popping By and then the rainbow from Fluffy Puffy Unicorns.

Then came the fun part – the Copic colouring! I chose some bright, fun colours to match the greens and golds. The trick with no-line colouring is to boost the contrast to make up for the lack of a black line. To ensure this, I use at least three or four markers for each colour.

To get some of those finer details, I always come back in with my coloured pencils – especially around the eyes, nose and mouth. Just a black and white pencil do wonders for the contrast!

The finishing touch was to add a sentiment, stamped and die cut from the Bold Banners sets.

I don’t send out St Patrick’s Day cards, but at least this way I can wish someone a lucky birthday!
