Deer Friend

Hello, Heffy friends! Tallie here and I’m back today with a clean and simple card featuring the new Deer to Me stamp set. The focus of today’s post is stencil layering – you can get some really great effects just by layering one or more stencils.

I started off by aligning a blending cardstock panel with the gridlines on the Circle Masquerade stencil. This gave me the perfect backdrop to stamp out the cute little deer from the Deer to Me stamp set.

I stamped it again on a sticky note and cut it out to create a mask for the deer. Now here’s where the first part of the stencil layering comes in – I layered over the Green Fields stencil and inked on some Antique Linen and Scattered Straw Distress Ink to give a gradient background.

You could leaf (!) it there, but I took it a step further and layered over the Falling Leaves stencil and used Scattered Straw to give a subtle autumnal effect.

I could then remove the stencils and mask to colour in the deer with my Copic markers. I chose some lovely warm browns (in the E50 and 20 families) to coordinate with the background. The falling leaves looked a little flat to me so I used a light brown coloured pencil to add some light veining.

The final touch was to add a sentiment from the set under the scene. The ‘deer’ fits in beautifully between the deer’s legs – almost as if it was made for it!

Give stencil layering a go and see what beautiful effects you can create!
