Color Wheel Combos – Llamazing Llama Scene
Hello crafty friends! My name is Peggy Emmerink and welcome to my brand new Heffy Doodle blog series called Color Wheel Combos! I usually choose the colors for my card either intuitively or get inspiration from fellow crafters. But for this series, I wanted to get up close and personal with color by using a color wheel to help me choose colors that work well together. I hope to learn a lot for myself along the way. But I certainly hope you will enjoy going on this journey of discovery with me! Let’s get started!
Let me show you the color wheel I will be using. The photograph below shows the color wheel. It is a simple tool with two sides showing all the colors of the rainbow. There is an overlay that you can rotate which shows you what way different colors relate to one another. I decided to start this blog series by using complementary colors. This particular color scheme draws from two colors on the opposite side of the color wheel. When you use this, the result is a high-contrast color combo that pops. Examples of complementary color combinations are red and green, yellow and purple, but also orange and blue. I got some inspiration from looking at pictures on the internet showing me complementary colors in nature. I found this beautiful picture of mountains basking in the orange light of sunset over a deep blue valley and lake. And I immediately imagined one of the cute llamas from the Llamazing Llamas stamp set into my scene. I tried to match my swatches of Distress Oxide Ink to the color wheel.
Note that there are still different tints (tones and shades) of color within that complementary color scheme of orange and blue. A tint is any chosen color plus white. So there is still some room for variation of color within a relatively limited complementary color scheme, by using different tints of the same color.
I started this card with a couple of different Distress Oxide Inks (Uncharted Mariner, Tumbled Glass, Ripe Persimmon and Dried Marigold), some masking tape and three gorgeous Heffy Doodle stencils. I cut a panel of white cardstock to 5.5 x 4.25 inches and fastened it to my glass media mat. I covered it with the Oval Masquerade Stencil. I used Heffy Doodle memo tape to make a straight line at about two thirds of the available space. I started by blending my lightest blue ink, before covering it with the Ripple Waves Stencil and adding my darker blue ink. I splattered it with some white paint for some added interest and added some more details with a white gel pen.
I moved the memo tape to cover my ink blended ‘water’ to start on the valley and the mountains. For this I used the Arizona Stencil. Here I splattered with some orange metallic ink. Lastly, I stamped the tiniest Llama from Llamazing Llamas and the direction sign and colored these with alcohol markers. For the colors I chose natural colors (brown and white) which are not part of the color wheel.
Next, I cut the panel with the largest of the Scalloped Rectangle Dies. I added my colored images to the panel with both liquid glue and foam tape. To finish my card I added a heat embossed sentiment on kraft cardstock! I hope I have been able to inspire you to try out new colors and experiment a little bit! I’d love to see what you make. Also feel free to give me a shout or ask any questions over on Instagram!
Long distance hugs!
Peggy
