Hairy Little Birthday Card – VIDEO
Hello there stamping friends, Carrie Rhoades back on the blog today. I had so much fun making today’s card. I had it all planned out in my head, a cute little cow in a meadow. But this cow had a dream of living on the ranch! This card took on a life of it’s own, I followed and I love the results! Join me on the journey in this video.
If you can not see the video on this screen, you can also catch it on our YouTube channel.
Now let’s take a close up look at this card and talk about how it came together.
This card started off with the background. I used the Woodgrain Texture Die on a piece of brown card stock. I wanted to highlight the stitched lines, so I used the Crooked Broomstick Distress Mica crayon.
For the focal point of this card I knew I wanted to use the Mini Essentials die set to make a Polaroid like frame. Then I stamped my cow and fence, from the Highland Honeys stamp set, on a separate piece of card stock. After coloring the image it would go behind the frame.
I stamped the cow first using Fade Out ink. I stamped the cow again on some Heffy Tape to create a mask. I cut the mask of the cow out and stuck it over the cow I stamped on the white card stock. Then I was able to stamp the fence to make it look like the cow is standing in front of the fence.
Then it was time to color. I used Copic Markers and Heffy Doodles Alcohol Friendly Card stock, which made for easy blending. Be sure to watch the video so you can see the no line coloring.
Now let’s talk about all the little extras on this card. The sentiment is from the Highland Honeys stamp set and is so fun with this furry cow. I stamped it on light blue card stock to bring out the light blue of the sky. I flag cut the end myself for added interest.
The large star is a die in the Mini Essentials Die set, the same die set I used to create the Polaroid like frame on this card.
The baby clay stars I had in my stash were the perfect little embellishment for this card.
The “rope” at the top of the card is a bit of twine that I had on hand. I made it more scruffy looking by pulling the twine apart into two strands. I only used one of them and just coiled it up. It gives the feel of rope and the furry feel that I want you to get from the cow.
The splatter was done using Distress Mica Spray Stains in Crooked Broomstick and Flickering candle. SIDE NOTE, if you find it hard to find these Distress Mica products it is because they were a seasonal release. You can easily replace these items with other sprays you have on hand.
To add texture to this card I roughed up the edges of the woodgrain panel and added some glaze to the large star.
I am very happy with how this card tuned out in the end and glad it took on a life of it’s own. This furry highland cow is happy on the ranch.

February 20, 2022 at 5:55 amHi Lesley Oman,
I loved the workshop on masking you did for the Card Summit. Thanks for the wonderful masking techniques. You are a wonderful presenter. It was also great that you offered a 20% coupon. I read your cautions about shipping to the US. I thought it would be better if I ordered from Simon Says Stamps. I purchased a masking tape container, two extra rolls and alcohol friendly paper. I also ordered the Highland stamps set and dies. It reminded me of my visit to Scotland when I was stationed in the UK. I will be making more purchases in the future. You have great products.
