Cool Friends – Featured on the Simon Says Stamp Blog

Hello crafty friends!

I am so super duper excited, because today I have a project to share over on the Simon Says Stamp blog! I am sharing a video tutorial on how I used the new Heffy Doodle Warm Hugs stamps and dies to create this card – which includes a pop up scene on the inside!

I also show you how I tried to recreate an Aurora Borealis look using my distress inks. Head on over to the Simon Says Stamp blog now to check it out!

This set is an inappropriate representation of an indigenous group. The word used to reference this group of indigenous people, is considered racist. In Inuktitut, it actually means flesh-eater, which is why the word Inuit is preferred. Our northern indigenous people are fighting hard to have their lives valued and I am not sure perpetuating stereotypes or reducing them to cutesy figures is the way to go in 2017.

Hello,
Thank you for voicing your concerns. This is something that was just brought to our attention recently. Interestingly, it seems that this topic is politically sensitive depending on your culture and geographic location but as a British company, this is not something we had ever been exposed to. We apologise if the name of this stamp set has caused offense, or upset, in any way. From our research, it appears that indeed it would be incorrect and rude to call someone an Eskimo if they were indeed an Inuit but this stamp set is not depicting a specific culture or race, merely fictional boy, girl and baby illustrations which are bundled up warm against the cold. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eskimo) I hope that allays any concerns you may have but feel free to us the Contact Us Page to discuss the matter directly.
Regards
Craig

Thank you for your reply. I do understand that as a British stamp company you may not be as aware of the issues facing the Inuit people. The word used to describe the group that is referred to in this set does make a cultural reference to the Inuit people whether that is your intention or not. You have used the word in your sentiment and as is evidenced in the response to the set on the Simon Says Stamp blog, people are referring to the images of the girl and boy by this word. I understand that your intention was not to be racist or to perpetuate stereotypes – it was to create a cute stamp set; so hopefully when we know better we do better. Whether intended or not it is still cultural appropriation, As a canadian it is a subject that is keenly felt as our indigenous peoples – Inuit, First Nations, Metis – fight rightfully to stop being seen as caricatures.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. We will be looking into this further, but for now we will be undergoing the process of renaming this stamp set so that it is called Warm Hugs.
